Are You Making This One Mistake With Your Favourite DIY Face Cream? (I Know I Was.)
My heart broke. I’d made the perfect rosewater and aloe vera cooling mist. It smelled divine, the ingredients were pure, and I’d spent good money on that beautiful organic aloe.
I felt so proud, lining it up in my bathroom cabinet.
And a week later, I saw them: those tiny, fuzzy, black specks. Mould.
I felt so frustrated. I was trying to be more natural, to control my ingredients, not create… a failed science experiment. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably felt this exact frustration. I was so close to giving up on water-based recipes altogether.
The ‘Aha!’ Moment That Changed Everything
Here’s the thing: My ‘mistake’ wasn’t my recipe or my ingredients. It was a fundamental misunderstanding of what I was making.
I went down a deep research rabbit hole, and I’ve come to realise something:
The second you add water (or aloe, or hydrosol), you’re not just making skincare—you’re making a fresh food source for bacteria.
I was treating my water-based cream like an oil-based balm. And that, I learned, is the one mistake that changes everything.
It’s not about being scared; it’s about being smarter. Here are the ‘rules’ I now live by to make sure my creations are safe and last longer.
Rule 1: Know Your Base (Oil vs. Water)
This is the most crucial takeaway. We need to divide our DIY pantry in two.
Anhydrous (Oil-Only): This is stuff like your whipped body butters, face oils, and cleansing balms made only of butters, waxes, and oils. These are generally safe. Why? No water. Bacteria, yeast, and mould can’t grow. You might add an antioxidant (like Vitamin E) to help stop the oils from going rancid, but that’s a different job.
Hydrous (Water-Based): This is the danger zone. It’s any cream, lotion, mist, or serum that contains water, aloe vera, or a floral hydrosol. If it’s ‘hydrous’, it will grow microbes. Period. This is where my mist went so wrong, and this is where we need to be more careful.
Rule 2: Stop Confusing Antioxidants with Preservatives (I see you, Vitamin E!)
This was my biggest, most expensive mistake. For years, I thought Vitamin E and things like Grapefruit Seed Extract were ‘natural preservatives’.
They’re not. At least, not in the way we need them to be.
Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a brilliant antioxidant. Its job is to protect your precious oils from oxidising (going rancid) and add skincare benefits. It does nothing to stop mould. Grapefruit Seed Extract is highly debated and often shown to be ineffective at this job.
Rule 3: Use the Right Tool for the Job (The ‘Insider’ Term)
So, what’s the solution? We need a broad-spectrum natural preservative.
That’s the ‘insider’ term I learned. ‘Broad-spectrum’ means it protects against all the nasties: bacteria, yeast, and mould. This is the only way to get a safe DIY skincare shelf life.
I’m not here to sell you one specific brand, but I can tell you what to look for. When you’re researching, look for ingredients that are ECOCERT or COSMOS approved. These are globally recognised standards for natural and organic cosmetics. This puts you in control, so you can research and choose the one that feels right for your products.
Your ‘Next Level’ DIY (And Why This Is a Good Thing)
Learning about the need for a natural preservative for DIY skincare didn’t make my hobby scarier. It actually made me feel better at it.
It was the ‘level-up’ I needed. Knowing how to preserve DIY face cream properly means my creations are not just pure, but genuinely safe and effective. It’s the difference between a fun hobby and making products you can truly trust.
You’ve got this. This knowledge is what takes you from a beginner to an informed, confident creator.
